Iran Experience on Fighting Against Coronavirus

Dr. Mohammad Khazaee, Secretary General of Iran National ICC Committee informed Mr. John Denton, the ICC Secretary General on Islamic Republic of Iran’s Experiences on the issue of measures taken to control the spread of CoronaVirus.

Through this letter, Dr. Khazaee expressed his appreciation for the effective measures and initiatives of ICC on fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic, and indicated; “Since the Coronavirus epidemic in Iran, the business community and the MSMEs have faced trade decrease problems which led to government support through tax exemptions, rescheduling the debt repayments and providing them with billions of dollars of concessional loans. Female-headed households and low income families are also provided with grants. Refugees in Iran are also benefiting free insurance and health services during Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, there are social charity organizations and safety net systems in Iran which support the poor refugee families. Millions of refugees are working in Iran and we include them in the statistics of official businessmen and employees.

FinTech is available during CoronaVirus pandemic in Iran and the majority of people are using mobile wallet or electronic means for financial transactions. Employers have taken measures for remote working of their personnel and there have been policies for virtual work from home.

The Plasma Therapy project for Covid-19 patients with the support of the private sector of Iran has been so successful and hundreds of patients received this treatment and were treated with the Plasma of the recovered patients. The related Ministries and the private sectors of Iran have informed their readiness to share the experiences on this method of treatment with Europe and other countries.

The business community of Iran, with the close collaboration of Chambers of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture of Iran, Tehran and other provincial Chambers, has established the Nafas (Breathe) Campaign, taking actions to confront this virus in an effective way by providing doctors, nurses and other hospital staff with essential items through helping manufacturers and businessmen since the early days of the Coronavirus outbreak. Due to their social responsibilities, these chambers have also tried to support and protect their members as well as economic key players in various ways and also channel economic operators’ activities into charitable activities in order to assist the society, people and hospital staff who are fighting this virus. Several MSMEs have changed their lines of production to help the government in producing facial shields, masks, gloves, gowns and disinfectants. Such atmosphere of cooperation, resource mobilization and empathy between the government and the private sector has created an exemplary behavior.

To compensate shortcomings of the healthcare sector and help the country’s economy during the CoronaVirus crisis, the government has asked for 5 billion USD loan from IMF and 50 million USD facilities from the World Bank Group which have not yet been provided. Reiterating the necessity of reviewing the legal regulations of commercial as well as multilateral agreements in current situation, I appreciate if ICC adds to our voice to benefit the MDB facilities in fighting against CoronaVirus pandemic, in international arena.”
